| Running-InAll components in contact with one another (including bearing surfaces, pistons or piston rings) as well as intermeshing transmission components (such as the gear wheels) must be “run in” after assembly in a new vehicle. The running-in recommendations are explained in detail in the owner’s manual. As a general rule, however, the engine should not be driven at more than two-thirds of its rated speed for the first 1,500 kilometres. After that and up to about 3,000 kilometres, engine speed can be gradually increased up to the rated speed. By then, all of the components will have adjusted to one another. Running in a vehicle carefully will generally result in a longer service life and lower fuel and oil consumption. |
